The Minister for Sport Kate Lundy today congratulated Surfing Australia on the success of its new junior surfing program during a visit to the iconic Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach surfing event in Victoria.
Senator Lundy said the Australian Government was a proud supporter of surfing in Australia and the junior Surf Groms program demonstrated just how popular the sport was in Australia.
?In the first season of the program there have been more than 60 surf schools and 5,000 participants sign up,? Senator Lundy said.
?The junior development program encourages participation and helps kids develop strong ocean awareness and beach safety skills so they can enjoy and embrace? this great Australian pastime.
?It is pleasing to see the strong partnership between Surfing Australia and the Government develop and implement this important program to encourage participation and help kids develop strong beach skills at a critical period in their lives.
?Today?s Surf Groms could be tomorrows Bells Beach winners.?
Senator Lundy said the Government contributed over $1.5 million in annual funding to surfing in Australia to grow the sport and deliver international success.
?The Government recognises the importance of surfing in Australia and supports programs to develop strong beach safety skills,? Senator Lundy said.
?In Australia we have a long history of producing surfing champions, winning four men?s and 15 women?s world tour titles.
?The Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach is an iconic event both for surfing internationally and for Australians contributing around $2.7 million into the local economy last year through tourism.?
Senator Lundy attended the second day of the surfing classic at Bells Beach, outside the city of Geelong, which is now in its 51st year and is the worlds longest running surfing competition.
There are approximately 336 100 participants in all surf sports according to the latest Exercise, Recreation, and Sport Survey.
