In immigration detention-related news, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted a comprehensive sweep during the last week of March resulting in the arrests of more than 3,100 alleged criminal aliens and fugitives hailing from 116 different countries.
ICE reports that among those arrested in the sweep, nearly one-third had previously been convicted of more than one crime. These convictions ranged from manslaughter and murder to drug trafficking and sex crimes.
In addition, some of those arrested were considered national security threats, while 50 belonged to gangs, and 149 had been convicted for sex offenses.
"There are 3,168 fewer criminal aliens and egregious immigration law violators in our neighborhoods," said (ICE) Director John Morton.
According to ICE officials, some of the suspects allegedly entered the U.S. illegally, while others violated the terms of legal immigration and were therefore subject to deportation. Still others had already been deported from the United States at least once and now face federal felony charges for illegal re-entry into the country. This is a serious offense that can result in a bring 20-year prison sentence.
This sweep is the third project of this sort in what ICE calls Operation Cross Check, and the most successful yet. About 1,900 officers in all 50 states participated. While agents targeted specific individuals during the sweep, they also arrested others they discovered during the process.
This sweep is in keeping with the Obama administration's pledge that federal officials will now be devoting the majority of their efforts to deporting those undocumented immigrants who either have criminal records, or who pose a threat to national security or public safety.
Indeed, a June 2010 memo from Director Morton to agency staff outlined multiple factors for ICE personnel to consider when exercising "prosecutorial discretion," including military service, the pursuit of education, the age of the person subject to deportation, how long the person has been in the country and whether the person's relatives are U.S. citizens.
