AAA auto club adding repair centers in Phila. suburbs | Used Car ...

AAA Mid-Atlantic said Monday it has opened two car-repair centers in the Philadelphia suburbs ? and others could follow.

The locations, in Wayne and Clifton Heights, Pa., are among six repair shops the Wilmington, Del.-based organization has in four states.

AAA Mid-Atlantic, which has 3.7 million members, said getting into repairs was a natural fit, extending its role in car maintenance and travel-related information. It will generate revenue that will defray expenses the nonprofit might otherwise have to pass back to members in the form of higher annual dues.

The organization hopes it fills a need lingering from the recession.

?The recession has led to many people keeping their vehicles longer, thus making vehicle maintenance more critical than ever,? said Berni Koch, president and CEO of AAA Mid-Atlantic. ?These challenging fiscal times have also caused many dealerships and auto repair shops to close. With so many automotive service shops disappearing, AAA Mid-Atlantic wants to ensure that reliable and trustworthy repair services are available to motorists.?

In the two Philadelphia-area locations, AAA has invested more than $3 million. The centers will offer routine maintenance, diagnostics, tune-ups and service on tires, brakes, air conditioning and cooling systems, batteries and electrical systems.

In Wayne, the organization has a Car Care, Insurance and Travel Center at 849 W. Lancaster Ave. It is already doing repairs but officially opens for business on April 2.

In Clifton Heights, AAA will open April 4 at 5233 W. Baltimore Ave., in a former Saturn dealership.

The organization is looking at Willow Grove, Pa., for its next site, and other locations in Pennsylvania are being considered, said spokeswoman Jenny M. Robinson.
