Warrant: Debt Sparked South Windsor Auto Shop Beating

HARTFORD?

The men charged in the attack on the owner of a South Windsor auto repair shop last month told police the victim owed one of them money, according to court records.

The men claimed that Robert Lareau, the owner of Forced Induction Motorsports on Edwin Road, had been paid "a lot of money" for work on a Mazda RX-7 that was never done, according to an arrest warrant.

Lareau and a friend, Ryan Kelleher, were badly beaten in the assault.

Lareau was in a coma at Hartford Hospital with numerous skull, brain and facial injuries after the attack, but he has since been released, a hospital spokeswoman said. Information on his condition is not available. Kelleher was treated and released.

If Lareau survives, he has a "25 percent chance of regaining a normal quality of life," the warrant states.

Nathaniel Chambers went the auto shop on Jan. 8, with his cousin, Jose Luis Ramos, and two brothers, Luis Miguel Ruiz and Francisco Gabriel Ruiz, and during the ride Chambers mentioned that Lareau owed him money, the warrant states.

After arriving at the shop, Chambers asked to see the muffler on the car, then allegedly sprayed Lareau in the face with wasp spray and hit him over the head with an exhaust pipe, the warrant states. Kelleher tried to leave, but Ramos struck him with a rifle that Kelleher stored in a closet at the shop, the warrant says.

Lareau was sitting on the floor, and Chambers allegedly struck him with the pipe every time he attempted to get up. Luis Ruiz estimated that Chambers hit Lareau in the head with the pipe about 20 to 30 times. Chambers also hit Kelleher with the same pipe and sprayed him with the wasp spray, the warrant states.

Ramos found two bullets for the rifle in a closet and said something like, "Should I do it?," but Francisco Ruiz said "no" and that they needed to leave, and Luis Ruiz hit Lareau twice in the torso with a bat, the warrant states.

Before leaving, Chambers said they should steal items from the shop, and Luis Ruiz took a laptop from the counter, Chambers put some items in his bag and took the muffler and Ramos took the rifle and Lareau's cellphone, the warrant states.

Chambers is charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree assault and conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery, but the charges could change, the warrant states.

Ramos was charged with first-degree assault, first-degree robbery, theft of a firearm and first-degree unlawful restraint, police said. He also was charged with second-degree threatening and sixth-degree larceny. He was in custody with bail set at $400,000. Chambers is also in custody on $400,000 bail.

Luis Ruiz was charged with first-degree robbery, second-degree assault and sixth-degree larceny, police said. He is free after posting $60,000 bail.

Francisco Ruiz was charged with second-degree reckless endangerment and breach of peace. He was also released after posting $10,000 bail.
