Basic Golf Lingo Explained

At one point in time, you have probably experienced standing behind a guy about to hit more par-3 greens. Or, have been to an awkward silence while looking at the golfer who, after lipping out a 12-footer, curses his luck and hits his club audibly against his shin. Then you suddenly ask yourself the question, "What is really going on?" What are all these green, teed up and club all about? This is where golf lingo enters the picture.

Knowing different golf terminologies is very important especially if you are serious of making this game your kind of sports. Whether you are an experienced golfer or just a mere spectator, there is no excuse not knowing or even familiarizing yourself of different golf terms. So, here are some of them:

? Green - Also known as "putting green", "dance floor", or "putting surface". This is the peak of a golf hole where the flagstick and the hole are positioned. Making it to the putting green is what golf is all about and the very reason why all golfers want to hit more greens. The secret to hitting more greens? Listen to your instincts. Depending on the distance, the lie, the wind and how confident you are feeling, remember to shift your target away from the flag towards the fat part of the green.

? Tee shot - Also known as the "tee ball" or "drive". Tee shot is deemed as the resulting shot from hitting the golf ball off the peg. The tee shot is known to be the very first shot of any golf hole.

? Par - This is deemed as the frequency of strokes a golf player is projected to complete a cup/hole on a golf course. Each hole has a par of between 3-5.

? Scrambling - A tournament format wherein players in a group hit a shot from the teeing ground, then select the best shot with each of them hitting from that spot until the golf ball is holed. Scrambling is calculated by the fraction of times a golfer makes par after missing a green in regulation.

? Putt - This is the shot taken with the putter. There are only two kinds of putts: lags and short ones you feel you can always make. The goal of one is to set up the other.

? Golf ball - This is one of the most important equipment you use for every shot. If you want to find the ball that performs best tee-through-green, the best place to do so is on a golf course. Maximizing driver distance will reveal which golf ball you hit the longest off the tee, and will result in higher scores.

? Birdie - This is the score of one less than par for any hole. Example: "Par-3 birdie or better is the percentage of times a player makes a birdie or better on a par 3.

? Golf club - This is mainly used to hit a golf ball. There are many types of clubs. There are those with larger heads, some are built with a higher moment of inertia while others are made with iron length shafts. But despite all these, the club's mission has not changed: to hit a golf ball and score.
