Microsoft confirms Surface with Windows 8 Pro pricing: starting at $899 for 64GB version, shipping in January

Microsoft confirms Surface with Windows 8 Pro pricing starting at $899 for 64GB version

Details on the Pro variety of Microsoft's Surface tablet have been hard to come by since the company first announced it back in June, but it's filled in some big ones today. It's confirmed in a blog post that the device will start at $899 for the 64GB model, with the 128GB version setting you back $999. Both of those are what's Microsoft's dubbing the "standalone" model, which means you'll get a Surface pen/stylus, but have to shell out extra for a Touch or Type Cover (each over $100). Both will be available in January, although there's no specific date or word on pre-orders yet.

As you can see, the device looks similar to the Surface RT, including the same "VaporMg" casing and built-in kickstand, and it also boasts a 10.6-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio. A key difference with that latter bit, though, is that the screen packs a full 1920 x 1080 resolution as opposed to the 1366 x 768 found on the RT model. You'll also get a third-gen Core i5 processor with 3rd Gen Intel Core i5 Processor with Intel HD Graphics 4000 (no more specifics on that just yet), 4GB of RAM, a Mini DisplayPort that can output a 2560 x 1440 resolution, a full-size USB 3.0 port and, of course, Windows 8 Pro with support for all your traditional desktop applications. All that expectedly makes the tablet itself a bit heftier than its RT-based counterpart -- it's just over half-an-inch thick and weighs in at two pounds on the nose.

Department of Commerce renews VeriSign control of .com registry, demands price freeze

Department of Commerce renews VeriSign control of com registrations, demands a price freeze

In many ways, VeriSign has been one of the internet's true arbiters. It's ICANN's official registry operator for .com domains, which lets it determine how (and how much) we pay to get a particularly coveted address. As we're learning, the US Department of Commerce is only comfortable with that state of affairs to a certain point. It just approved a deal renewal that will let VeriSign watch over .com between December 1st this year and November 30th, 2018, but it's requiring that the company drop a previous right to hike registration prices as many as four times, at up to 7 percent, over the length of the term. The current $7.85 price will last unless VeriSign either faces exceptional circumstances or can prove that the market is healthy enough to lift the ceiling. We're sure the business isn't happy when the DOC move dictates how much money it can make, but compulsive domain hunters will enjoy the extra dollars in their pockets.

U.N. nuclear chief sees no progress on Iran concerns

VIENNA (Reuters) - The U.N. nuclear agency made no progress in a year-long push to find out if Iran worked on developing an atomic bomb, its chief said on Thursday, calling for urgent efforts to end Tehran's standoff with the West.

Yukiya Amano said he would not give up seeking to end what Western diplomats describe as Iranian stonewalling of the agency's investigation into possible military dimensions to the Islamic state's nuclear program.

U.N. inspectors will meet Iranian officials for a new round of talks in Tehran next month to seek an agreement to allow the agency to resume its inquiry, after several meetings since January failed to achieve a breakthrough.

"Now is the time for all of us to work with a sense of urgency and seize the opportunity for a diplomatic solution," Amano, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), told its 35-nation governing board.

Iran rejects suspicions it is on a covert quest for atomic bomb capability.

But its refusal to curb nuclear work with both civilian and military applications, and its lack of openness with the IAEA, have drawn tough Western sanctions and a threat of pre-emptive military strikes by Israel.

A year ago, the IAEA published a report with a trove of intelligence indicating past, and some possibly continuing, research in Iran that could be relevant for nuclear weapons.

They included suspected high-explosive experiments at the Parchin military site southeast of Tehran, and possible work on designing a device to produce a burst of neutrons for setting off a fission chain reaction.

The U.N. agency, whose mission is preventing the spread of nuclear weapons in the world, has since tried to gain access to Iranian sites, officials and documents it says it needs for the inquiry.

"I am unable to report any progress on clarifying the issues relating to possible military dimensions to Iran's nuclear program," Amano said, in a frank statement to the agency's policy-making body in Vienna.

"WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY"

He expressed concern that "extensive activities" at Parchin - an allusion to suspected clean-up work there - would seriously undermine the agency's investigation, if and when it was allowed to visit the sprawling facility.

"Satellite imagery shows that extensive activities, including the removal and replacement of considerable quantities of earth, have taken place at this location," Amano said, according to a copy of his speech to the closed-door meeting.

Tehran says Parchin is a conventional military facility and has dismissed Western allegations that it is trying to remove evidence of any illicit nuclear-related experiments.

It says it must first reach a broader agreement with the IAEA on how the agency should conduct its investigation before it possibly allows inspectors to visit Parchin.

The IAEA's talks with Iran are separate from - but closely linked to - efforts by six world powers to resolve the decade-long nuclear dispute with Iran that has raised fears of a new war in the Middle East.

Diplomacy between Iran and the powers - the United States, China, Russia, France, Germany, and Britain - has been deadlocked since a June meeting that ended without success.

Both sides now say they want to resume talks soon, after the re-election of U.S. President Barack Obama, and diplomats expect a new meeting in Istanbul in December or January.

"We all recognize that there is a window of opportunity and that window is not very big and it is not going to be open for very long," one envoy in Vienna said.

Iran has faced a tightening of Western trade sanctions which the United States and its allies hope will force Iran to curb its nuclear program.

Tehran has so far showed no sign of doing so, with its atomic energy chief this week saying Iran will go on refining uranium "with intensity". Enriched uranium can fuel nuclear power plants but also provide material for bombs.

The Year of Motherhood: Serving Our City Together

This post was written by contributor Jamie Ivey.

In the eleven months of my year of motherhood challenge, I never imagined that this one would give me the most trouble. ?I would have looked ahead to November and thought ? EASY. ?I love our city. ?I love to serve. ?This will be a no brainer.

Instead it was super hard. ?I?m not sure if it was the time of year that made it hard. ?Are we too busy now? ?Oh that?s a lame excuse to not serve. ?Or is it my kids ages? ?Are they too young to get it? ?Yeah, even lamer. ?Kids only know what you teach them. ?Did I just not see the value in this?

None of my excuses seem to matter. ?I learned a lot about myself and my kids by looking back on this month. ?I learned that:

#1 Your kids only know how to serve if you teach them. ?When I take a meal to someone after they have had a baby I usually don?t bring my kids. ?It?s just easier that way, y?all know what I mean! ?But, unfortunately they never see me buy my favorite food for someone else instead of our family.

One thing that we?ve started this year is we have money jars and each of the kids has a spend and a give jar. ?They kick and scream each time we have them put money in the give jar, but I know that in a few weeks when we get out the Compassion International catalog and all pick out a goat for a family they will LOVE it!

#2 Kids are resilient. ?My kids threw a screaming fit when my mom and I took them shopping to buy presents for other kids for our Operation Christmas Child boxes. ?I told them they couldn?t get anything for themselves and you would have though I told them they had to eat broccoli for a month. ?They were SO distraught. ?And I was SO frustrated with them! ?BUT by the end of the shopping trip they were really putting all their heart and soul into picking out gifts for little boys around the world. ?I went from frustrated mom to very proud mom during that one shopping trip.

#3 Serving takes planning.??My mom came up one weekend to visit and we took our kids to fill up her shoeboxes. ?After that I planned on our family serving with a local business here that serves food to homeless people, and of course I kept forgetting to call and then before you know it, it?s Thanksgiving. ?Yes, we served by filling up shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child, but our family didn?t serve together in the way I imagined. ?Serving takes planning, it doesn?t just happen.

?My goal for December is to actually do the Jesse Tree with my kids. ?Last year I had big plans to do this, and never did and that is actually what inspired the whole?Year of Motherhood challenge.??I?m happy to announce that we?ve already started because I have an amazing church that sends home a planner each week on what to read and even the paper to color. ?They know moms need a little help sometimes!

Bigger than me doing the Jesse Tree with my kids though is how I want to actually enjoy this month. ?I want my kids to love Jesus more after this month.??I want to love Jesus more after this month?. ?My hope and prayer for all of us in December is that we relish the time with our famiies. ?Cherish the small things and let?s show our kids that?Christmas is about Jesus and Jesus only.

Join this discussion. ?How do you help your kids keep Christmas about Jesus? ?Click?HERE?to share all your great ideas with all of us!

Windows Phone Reboot Issue Fixed!

bishnoo

Looks like the folks at Redmond are getting their act together and have solved the first of the issues reported with the new Windows Phone 8 platform. Hallelujah! And that WAS fast!

Folks at UPI.com have reported that the fix is ready and will be released as an over-the-air fix in December. Why the wait you ask? We do too but better late than never (read WP7.8 release).?This fix will also solve the sync issues.

We?re continuing to investigate some reports of phones rebooting and have identified a cause with our partners,?

Nothing to do till December but wait for the updates and have fun restarting I guess.

#My2K: Obama uses Twitter to prod Congress on fiscal cliff

President Barack Obama sits in front of a screen displaying a question he tweeted during a "Twitter Town Hall"??

President Barack Obama urged Americans on Wednesday to help him pressure Congress to prevent a Jan. 1 tax hike on the middle class, saying it was up to the public to make sure Washington doesn't "screw this up."

"When the American people speak loudly enough, lo and behold Congress listens," Obama said, flanked by Americans who answered the White House's call to detail what that tax increase would cost them personally.

"We really need to get this right. I can only do it with the help of the American people," the president said. "It's too important for Washington to screw this up."

Obama's remarks were part of a ramped-up public campaign to pressure Republicans in Congress, who have resisted his calls for letting Bush-era tax cuts that chiefly benefit the wealthiest Americans expire. The president wants to extend reductions on income up to $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for families. But he wants taxes above that level to rise in order to spare popular government programs from the budget-cutter's ax.

Republicans want to extend the tax cuts for higher earners, insisting that a tax hike on that group will reduce investments that generate jobs at a time when the economy is still sputtering and unemployment remains high. The GOP has signaled it would be willing to consider boosting tax revenue as long as Democrats agree to overhaul popular entitlement programs like Medicare or Medicaid. But key Democrats have refused to include those programs in talks on avoiding the "fiscal cliff" of tax increases and spending cuts due to take effect Jan. 1.

"Let's keep middle-class tax low. That's what our economy needs, that's what the American people deserve," Obama said. "And if we get this part of it right, then a lot of the other issues surrounding deficit reduction in a fair and balanced and responsible way are going to be a whole lot easier.

"If we get this wrong the economy's going to go south," the president warned. "It's going to be much more difficult for us to balance our budgets and deal with our deficits because, if the economy's not strong, that means more money's going out in things like unemployment insurance and less money's coming in in terms of tax receipts and it just actually makes our deficit worse."

Obama urged Americans who agree with him to call, write and tweet lawmakers (using the hashtag #My2K), or post messages on their Facebook pages. "Do what it takes to communicate a sense of urgency. We don't have a lot of time. We've got a few weeks to get this thing done."

Still, he said, "I am confident that we will get it done."

The White House says that "a typical middle-class family of four" would pay Uncle Sam an additional $2,200 unless tax cuts are extended for them.

That $2,200 figure is the inspiration for #My2K, part of what the White House describes as an "online push" behind the president's approach. Obama has highlighted Twitter hashtags in past disputes with Republicans: #40dollars in the fight over the payroll tax holiday and #dontdoublemyrate in a feud over student loans.

The president, who spoke to top Republican and Democratic leaders over the weekend, was to make brief public remarks at the top of a meeting with his Cabinet at 3 p.m. before huddling with senior executives from major American corporations.

Here is the list of attendees, as provided by the White House:

? Frank Blake, Chairman and CEO, the Home Depot
? Lloyd Blankfein, Chairman and CEO, Goldman Sachs Group
? Joe Echeverria, CEO, Deloitte LLP
? Ken Frazier, President and CEO, Merck and Co.
? Muhtar Kent, Chairman and CEO, Coca Cola
? Terry Lundgren, Chairman, President and CEO, Macy's Inc.
? Marissa Mayer, CEO and President, Yahoo!
? Douglas Oberhelman, Chairman and CEO, Caterpillar
? Ian Read, Chairman and CEO, Pfizer
? Brian Roberts, Chairman and CEO, Comcast
? Ed Rust, Chairman and CEO, State Farm Insurance Co.
? Arne Sorenson, President and CEO, Marriott
? Randall Stephenson, Chairman and CEO, AT&T
? Patricia Woertz, President and CEO, Archer Daniels Midland

The fiscal cliff refers to an economically painful set of tax hikes and deep spending cuts that come into effect Jan. 1 unless Congress and the president reach a deal.

Audience at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis on Monday, September 12th, 2011. (KMOX/Michael Calhoun)

The economy of the Eighth District has continued to expand at a moderate pace since our previous survey. Retail and auto sales in October and early November increased over year-earlier levels. Recent reports of planned activity from manufacturing firms have been positive. In contrast, reports from services contacts have been negative on net. Residential real estate market conditions have continued to improve, while commercial and industrial real estate conditions have remained mixed. Reports of lending activity at a sample of large District banks indicated little change during the third quarter of 2012. Prices wages, and employment levels have remained generally stable.

Consumer Spending

Contacts reported that retail sales in October and early November were up, on average, over year-earlier levels. Fifty-four percent of the retailers reported increases in sales, while 27 percent saw decreases and 19 percent saw no changes. Forty-eight percent of the retailers noted that sales levels met their expectations, 48 percent reported that sales were below expectations, and 4 percent reported that sales were above expectations. The sales outlook through the end of the year was mostly optimistic: 66 percent of the retailers expect sales to increase over 2011 levels, while 17 percent expect sales to decrease and 17 percent expect sales to be similar to last year?s levels.

Car dealers in the District reported that sales in October and early November were up, on average, compared with last year. Fifty percent of the car dealers surveyed saw increases in sales, while 21 percent saw decreases and 29 percent saw no changes. Twenty-four percent of the car dealers noted that new car sales had increased relative to used car sales, while 6 percent reported the opposite. The sales outlook through the end of the year was mostly optimistic: 64 percent of the car dealers expect sales to increase over 2011 levels, while 14 percent expect sales to decrease and 22 percent expect sales to be similar to last year?s levels.

Manufacturing and Other Business Activity

Reports of plans for manufacturing activity have been positive since our previous report. Several manufacturing firms reported plans to hire new workers or expand operations, while fewer manufacturers reported plans to lay off workers or reduce operations. Firms in the plastic, poultry processing, shoe and apparel, aerospace, paper product, and beverage manufacturing industries announced plans to hire new employees or expand operations. In contrast, firms in the compressor, coal, semiconductors and related devices, auto parts, and food manufacturing industries announced plans to lay off workers or reduce operations.

Reports of planned activity in the District?s service sector have been negative on net since our previous report. Firms in business support, telecommunications, casinos, legal, and crisis management services announced plans to increase employment or expand operations. In contrast, a greater number of service firms, including firms in air transportation, sports, information, health insurance, health care, and financial services, announced plans to lay off workers or reduce operations.

Real Estate and Construction

Home sales increased throughout most of the Eighth District on a year-over-year basis. Compared with the same period in 2011, September 2012 year-to-date home sales were up 15 percent in Louisville, 4 percent in Little Rock, 11 percent in Memphis, and 14 percent in St. Louis. Residential construction also increased. Compared with the same period in 2011, September 2012 year-to-date single-family housing permits increased 40 percent in Louisville, 25 percent in Little Rock, 36 percent in Memphis, and 19 percent in St. Louis.

Commercial and industrial real estate conditions were mixed throughout most of the District. A contact in Louisville reported that office and industrial space leasing in the third quarter of 2012 was less robust than in the previous quarter. A contact in northeast Arkansas reported strong commercial real estate activity in the Jonesboro-Paragould area but soft activity in other areas in the region. Commercial and industrial construction activity continued to improve throughout most of the District. Contacts in Little Rock noted a couple of commercial construction projects in the downtown area. A contact in south central Kentucky noted that commercial construction remains strong. A contact in Memphis noted new speculative construction in the suburban market. Contacts in Memphis also reported several commercial construction projects in Jonesboro and large industrial construction projects in Shelby County.

Banking and Finance

A survey of senior loan officers at a sample of large District banks found little change in overall lending activity during the third quarter of 2012. During this period, credit standards for commercial and industrial loans remained largely unchanged, while the demand for these loans and the number of inquiries ranged from moderately decreased to moderately increased. Credit standards for commercial real estate loans were unchanged, while demand remained largely unchanged. Credit standards for prime residential mortgage loans remained generally unchanged, while demand ranged from about the same to substantially stronger. Meanwhile, credit standards and demand for consumer loans remained largely unchanged, although a third of the banks reported that demand for auto loans was moderately stronger.

Agriculture and Natural Resources

As of early November, the rice crop in the District states was fully harvested; similarly, over 90 percent of the corn, cotton, sorghum, and soybean crops have also been harvested. Harvest completion rates were 3 to 12 percentage points higher than their 5-year averages. Planting of winter wheat across the District states was 8 percent ahead of its 5-year average, while over 90 percent of all winter wheat was rated in fair or better condition. Excluding eastern Kentucky, the District?s year-to-date coal production for the end of October was 6.4 percent higher compared with the same period last year. Meanwhile, the District?s coal production for October 2012 was 6.2 percent higher than in October 2011.

Prices, Wages, and Employment

Contacts indicated that price levels over the past three months have stayed the same relative to the same period last year. Similarly, non-labor costs have generally stayed the same, although the majority of manufacturing contacts noted increases in costs. The majority of contacts reported that wages per employee and benefits per employee over the past three months have stayed the same relative to last year. Employment levels over the past three months showed signs of improvement; 38 percent of contacts reported increases in employment compared with the same period last year, while about half of contacts reported that their total employment has remained the same relative to last year.

Visit this Sega forums post to find out how you can vote for your three favorites. Then after December 1st the results will be presented by the forum admin to the Sega and Sumo development team. It?s all unofficial, but if enough fans can come together, it could push Sega to add more characters to the game.

The votes so far seem to favor:

    1. Ryo Hazuki
    2. Hatsune Miku
    3. Segata Sanshiro
    4. Vectorman
    5. Bayonetta
    6. Ristar
    7. ToeJam & Earl
    8. Billy Hatcher
    9. Axel Stone
    10. Blaze Fielding
    11. Phantom R
    12. Selvaria Bles
    13. Alis Landale
    14. Welkin Gunther
    15. Sakura Shinguuji
    16. Ash
    17. Opa-Opa
    18. Arle Nadja
    19. Kazuma Kiryu
    20. Sketch Turner
    21. The Chu Chus
    22. Space Harrier
    23. Bonanza Bros
    24. Amitie
    25. Spiral Knight
    26. Rag Rappy
    27. Jacky Bryant
    28. Ecco

I doubt they?ll add Ristar, though. Because the development team already said he?s the Flagman instead of playable, since they have ?issues with what the character looks like from behind.? Weird, but true!

Who could be the next DLC character?

ANALYST: Facebook Is About To Fill Instagram ... - Business Insider

Sterne Agee analysts Arvind Bhatia and Brett Strauser have increased their target price for Facebook stock to $32 based on what they believe is the impending "monetization" of Instagram, the photosharing service Facebook bought for $1 billion before its IPO.

Their theory is that Facebook's recent tweak of its terms of service paves the way to allow advertisers to buy space in Instagram users' photostreams.

Here's the relevant section from their note to investors today:

Instagram Monetization Coming Soon? Facebook recently proposed changes to its data use policy and statement of rights and responsibilities that will, in short, enable the company to share information with affiliates like Instagram. While the monetization of Instagram is something investors largely expect, the main question has been the timing. This change could be an indication that Facebook is planning to monetize Instragram in the near future, as it would allow Instagram to use Facebook?s data to personalize the Instagram user experience and perhaps target advertisements. We note that Instagram currently has approximately 39M monthly active users, according to AppData. We believe most estimates currently do not factor Instagram monetization yet due to the uncertainty on the timing.

Lunar Eclipse Darkens Full Moon Wednesday: Watch Online

Stargazers in the western United States will be able to see the moon dip into Earth's shadow during a minor lunar eclipse early Wednesday (Nov. 28), and observers outside the prime viewing spots can watch it live online.

During the so-called penumbral lunar eclipse, the November full moon passes into the hazy outer edge, or penumbra, of the earth's shadow, where the sun's light is only partially blocked. The effect for an observer on Earth is a subtle, but perceptible, shadow that spreads over the moon's surface.

Observers in East Asia, Australia, Hawaii and Alaska will be able to see the lunar eclipse from start to finish (weather permitting), but moon fans outside those areas can see the lunar event live online via the Slooh Space Camera. Slooh officials will provide a free webcast at the eclipse's peak time of 9:15 a.m. EST (1415 GMT). That is about a half hour before the moon reaches its fullest phase of the month at 9:46 a.m. EST (1446 GMT).

SPACE.com will carry the Slooh lunar eclipse webcast live here.

Slooh allows users to observe the night sky from a worldwide network of affiliated telescopes, and Wednesday's feed will be broadcast from either New Zealand or Hawaii, depending on which observatory has the better view. The lunar eclipse webcast will last about 30 minutes.

You can follow the event via Slooh directly at: http://events.slooh.com/.

Penumbral lunar eclipse explained

Wednesday's eclipse won't be as dramatic as a total lunar eclipse, in which the moon passes fully through the pitch-black core of Earth's shadow, but lunar observers can still find something worth watching as the moon turns a darker shade of pale.

The eclipse will begin at 7:15 a.m. EST (1215 GMT), when the moon first breaches the outer edges of Earth's shadow (called the penumbra). Because the resulting change in color will be extremely faint, it will likely only be detectable to the naked eye after more than half of the moon has passed into the penumbra.

That means that the farther west an observer is located in the United States, the better chance he or she will have of noticing a change in the moon. The lunar eclipse will reach its peak, with close to 92 percent of the moon's diameter immersed in the penumbra, at about 9:30 a.m. EST (1430 GMT), hours after the moon has set on the East Coast.

Observers in the Mountain Time Zone will have the best chance of noticing the dimming just before moonset, which comes at 6:59 a.m. local time (1359 GMT) in Denver. And the Pacific Standard Time Zone, where the peak will arrive with a good leadoff on moonset, will have the best view in the lower 48 U.S. states.

Editor's note:?If you snap a photo of the dim penumbral lunar eclipse of 2012 on Nov. 28 and would like to share it with SPACE.com for a story or gallery, send images, comments and viewing location information to managing editor Tariq Malik at:?tmalik@space.com.

Global shares, euro fall on Greece, U.S. fiscal talks

Stocks, commodities and the euro were steady or slightly weaker following strong gains over the past week as investors priced in the likelihood of a Greek deal and the U.S. fiscal challenge put a damper on market sentiment.

"On the most pressing issue for the markets into year end, that of the tax and spending issues in the U.S., the Sunday morning talk shows didn't reveal that we're on the cusp of a deal as more horse trading will go on in the weeks to come," said Peter Boockvar, managing director at Miller Tabak & Co in New York.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was down 74.45 points, or 0.57 percent, at 12,935.23. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was down 6.50 points, or 0.46 percent, at 1,402.65. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was up 2.10 points, or 0.07 percent, at 2,968.96.

Shares of retailers failed to lift the gloom on stocks after the start of the holiday shopping season.

The MSCI world equity index <.miwd00000pus>, which gained nearly 4 percent last week for its biggest weekly gain since April, was down 0.3 percent at 328.83.

"Last week was very good for the markets and it seems that investors are taking a breather ahead of the euro zone meeting," said Koen De Leus, senior economist at KBC in Brussels.

Euro zone finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund began their third meeting in as many weeks on Monday to try to seal a bailout deal for Greece but must still agree how to cut the country's debt to a more sustainable level.

Greece, where the euro zone's debt crisis erupted in late 2009, is the currency area's most heavily indebted country despite a big "haircut" this year on privately held bonds. It needs the funds to meet upcoming debt repayments.

"There is some caution, but it is also clear that Greece's lenders will not allow the country to fail. A Greek default is not an option," De Leus said.

French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici, speaking on Sunday after a weekend teleconference of Greece's international lenders, said the gap had closed significantly, and he believed a deal could be reached quickly.

The euro was down 0.4 percent at 106.49 yen, having earlier touched 107.13 yen, the single currency's strongest level since late April.

Against the dollar, the euro was down 0.1 percent at $1.2963, having hit its highest since late October on Friday.

Big gains for Catalan separatists in regional Spanish elections also hurt the euro, even though the result fell short of the convincing win needed to mount a push for a referendum on independence for the region.

There was a bigger impact from the Spanish vote in the fixed income market, where safe-haven German debt prices recovered some ground lost last week on concern over the outcome and Spanish bonds prices fell.

Benchmark 10-year German bond yields eased two basis points to 1.41 percent, while Spanish 10-year bond yields were last at 5.572 percent.

U.S. Treasury prices also rose on investors' appetite for safe-haven assets. The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was up 9/32, the yield at 1.6608 percent.

Major European share indexes were down across the board after some regional indexes had their best weekly performance since December over the past week.

The FTSE Eurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> of top European shares surged more than 4 percent last week but then fell 0.5 percent on Monday to 1,104.65.

Earlier, optimism around the euro zone's ability to achieve a deal on Greece lifted MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> to a two-week high.

OIL RETREATS

Oil prices were also in retreat after recent gains, but the move was limited by worries over supply from the Middle East as violence flared in Egypt and hopes an aid deal for Greece would brighten the outlook for demand.

Brent and U.S. crude futures fell more than $1 on Monday as concerns about Greek debt talks and the U.S. budget negotiations kept the specter of dampened oil demand in focus and pressured oil and equities prices.

Brent crude slipped below $111 a barrel while U.S. crude oil futures fell 0.7 percent to $87.68.

Gold fell $3.90, or 0.22 percent, to $1,748.60, after rising to its strongest since October 12 on Friday. Gold has gained around 11 percent this year, mainly due to expectations that U.S. monetary policy will remain loose.

Home Improvement Caddy: How to Buy Green Furniture and Other ...

Furniture, timber & other wooden things

Wood is a natural, renewable, recyclable, biodegradable and non-toxic material. It's more energy-efficient to produce than metal and most other materials and, in theory, if trees are planted in greater numbers than they're cut down, the timber industry can even help reduce global warming by soaking up CO2. But some of the wood we buy comes with serious environmental and social costs. Every year, millions of acres of ecologically precious tropical rainforest is lost. Urbanization and the clearing of farmland for cattle feed and palm oil are probably the biggest drivers of this destruction, but the harvesting of valuable woods - such as mahogany and teak - is still a major contributor to the problem. Such woods are used in everything from salad bowls and garden furniture to musical instruments.

Deforestation is a key source of climate change. It's an enormous threat to biodiversity, too: more than half the world's species are thought to inhabit the three remaining large tropical forests, in the Amazon and Congo basins and the island nations of South-East Asia. The loss of forest also alters local climates, causes soil erosion and in many cases is associated with serious social problems. Many forest-based people have contracted diseases from loggers or been aggressively forced off their indigenous lands - or even killed when they've refused to leave.

The UK imports around four-fifths of its wood and when it comes to rainforest varieties such as mahogany, a large proportion of these imports have been illegally sourced - that is, cut down or exported in a way that breaks the laws of the country it came from. There are no definitive figures, but Friends of the Earth and other groups have estimated that more than half of the UK's tropical wood imports have been illegally sourced, with much of the rest being legal but not from sustainably man?aged forests. The timber industry disputes such claims, yet cases keep popping up which suggest that even wood specialists with ethical policies and big budgets are failing to keep their noses clean (as the Royal Family discovered when the Queen's Gallery was inadvertently refurbished with wood from endangered forests in Cameroon).

Good wood

The best way to be sure that your wood has come from sustainably managed forests is to choose products bearing the logo of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). There are various sustainable wood labelling schemes out there. But many of them - such as the American Sustainable Forestry Initiative - are run by the timber industry and lack the credibility of the FSC.

An international, independent, non-profit-making organization, the FSC was founded in 1993 after extensive consultation between "timber users, traders and representatives of environmental and human-rights organizations". It only accredits wood when it can vouch for the entire supply chain - or chain of custody - from forest to sawmill to proces?sor. The scheme has been criticized from time to time (in late 2002 the Rainforest Foundation accused the FSC of "knowingly misleading the public") but the vast majority of environmental groups fully support the organization and its labeling scheme.

Reclaimed wood

FSC-certified wood is a good choice, but environmentalists claim the very greenest option is to favor reclaimed (recycled) timber whenever possible. After all, for all its recyclable credentials, wood accounts for a significant proportion of our waste: Friends of the Earth has estimated that 3000 tons of perfectly good wood are thrown away or burnt each day just from buildings being demolished in the UK. And yet reclaimed wood is often better quality than new stuff, as it contains less water, is less likely to contract and was usually harvested before the advent of quick-growth forests, which are better at producing wood quickly than they are at delivering really fine timber.

The Reclaimed Building Supply website will help you find local suppli?ers of reclaimed timber and other products. Also check out Salvo, which has classifieds for everything from reclaimed floorboards to antique staircases, and the relevant page of the WasteBook site.

New, uncertified wood

If buying FSC-certified or reclaimed wood isn't an option, at the very least try to avoid tropical or semitropical hardwood such as mahogany, teak, redwood, rosewood, ebony and iroko (an increasingly popular choice for high-end kitchen worktops). Such products won't necessarily have been logged from virgin rainforests, but it's not unlikely. Also try to avoid suppliers that can't tell you about the origins of their woods.

ICE Shuts Down 2 SoCal Internet Businesses For Selling Fake Goods

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) ? Two Southern California Internet-based business were among several shut down by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ?in a Cyber Monday crackdown on counterfeit goods sold online, officials announced Monday.

Special agents with Homeland Security Investigations in Ventura served seizure warrants for two domain names linked to www.autoforms8m.com.

The website claims to offer easy and affordable access to legal forms online and is suspected of selling counterfeit Adobe software, officials said.

?Preliminarily, federal investigators estimate the loss of revenue to Adobe at more than $3 million,? ICE agents said in a news release.

The second seizure involved the San Diego-based website, Staxxs on Deck, which sold counterfeit Nike footwear, officials said.

?In addition to selling counterfeit merchandise at its El Cajon storefront location, the company also operated a website ? www.23isking.com ? that offered knockoff Nike shoes online,? ICE said.

According to an affidavit, the company?s website made approximately $1.5 million in proceeds from the fake goods.

The annual crackdown, which began in 2010, resulted in the seizure of 132 domain names that sold fake goods.

(AP) ? A week off, some rest and a poignant plea from a 15-year-old cancer patient got the New York Giants back on track.

Now the rest of the NFL has something to worry about. The Giants are playing like world champions again.

A refreshed Eli Manning came back from the bye week and threw three touchdown passes as the Giants embarrassed Aaron Rodgers and the streaking Green Bay Packers 38-10 on Sunday night.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak and gave the Giants (7-4) a two-game lead in the NFC East with five games left in the regular season. The dominating performance also ended a five-game winning streak for the Packers (7-4), who fell a game behind Chicago in the NFC North.

"We just had to go out there with a lot of confidence and play like we are capable," Giants center David Baas said. "I felt we did that. We showed everybody. People that counted us out, they better wake up."

No one was more pleased with the Giants than Adam Merchant. The 15-year-old fan from Barre, Vt., attended Friday's practice and Sunday's game, thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Merchant spoke to the team after practice and seemed to remind them what it's all about.

"I told them to go out and play like world champs," he said, sitting at a locker next to defensive captain Justin Tuck.

When asked why he gave the message, he shot back:

"Because we really needed to go out and play like world champs."

Against the Packers, the Giants did.

Manning, who had not thrown a touchdown in three games, had scoring strikes of 16 yards to rookie Rueben Randle, 9 yards to Victor Cruz and 13 to Hakeem Nicks. The last one gave him 200 for his career, breaking the team record held by Phil Simms.

"The thing I'm most proud of tonight is the way we played and getting a win," said Manning, who was 16 of 30 for 249 yards. "This was a big game, we needed to come out and play well and get a win. We finally got back to playing offense, defense, special teams, all of us playing at a high level, playing as a team, and hopefully we can build off of this momentum."

Everybody seemed to contribute. Ahmad Bradshaw ran 13 yards for a touchdown and went 59-yards with a screen pass to set up Andre Brown's 2-yard TD run on the opening drive.

The defense sacked Rodgers five times and set up 10 points with Corey Webster's pick leading to Lawrence Tynes' field goal and Osi Umenyiora's strip-sack and Jason Pierre-Paul's 10-yard return setting up Bradshaw's TD run that gave New York a 31-10 lead.

The 31 points were the most scored by the Giants in a half this season, and it pretty much decided the game.

The only negative was Brown broke his left leg in the second half and his season looks done.

The Packers were done before that, at as far as this game.

"I think this is a game that makes everybody look inside and find out what you're about," coach Mike McCarthy said. "I haven't felt like this since the first game I coached as a Green Bay Packers head coach. Beaten very thoroughly tonight. It doesn't taste good. It doesn't feel good."

Rodgers got Green Bay off to a great start, connecting with Jordy Nelson on a 61-yard scoring pass on its first series. There was little else to celebrate in a game where he finished 14 of 25 for 219 yards, an interception and a lost fumble.

"You win five in a row and everyone is happy, but like I said last year during the run, there are things that go under the radar that need to be handled," Rodgers said "Sometimes it takes a loss. ... We need to remember this feeling and not have this kind of embarrassment happen again.

The Packers were missing such key starters as linebacker Clay Matthews, defensive back Charles Woodson and receiver Greg Jennings, and it showed as they were manhandled by the Giants for the second straight time. New York beat them 37-20 in the NFC semifinal, a game some Packers said they lost more than the Giants won.

This one, there was no doubt who was the better team.

"We went out there and proved it," Merchant said.

Manning was impressed with the way Merchant handled himself, saying players felt it was special that the youngster had one wish and chose to spend time with the Giants.

"He had the opportunity to come out and talk to the team, so Coach Coughlin does a great job and all the players do a great job of making him feel welcome and fired up," Manning said. "It can be kind of nerve-racking to come talk to your favorite team and have a little pep talk, but he did a great job and he said to go show everybody you're the world champions and why you're the world champions and play that way. I think it got everybody fired up and obviously we came out and played the way that we know we can."

The Giants never trailed after Manning's touchdown pass to Randle, the first of his career. Webster's interception set up Tynes' field goal for a 17-7 lead and Cruz capped a 61-yard drive early in the second quarter to push the lead to 24-7.

A short field goal by Mason Crosby got Green Bay within two touchdowns, but Umenyiora's forced fumble set up Bradshaw's TD run and the game was over by halftime.

NOTES: The Giants lost safety Kenny Phillips with a knee injury in the third quarter. He was making his first appearance since Week 4. ... Giants right tackle David Diehl sustained a stinger in the first half. ... Green Bay lost safety M.D. Jennings (rib), DE C.J. Wilson (knee), and RB Johnny White (concussion). ... Giants tight end Martellus Bennett caught a fan who leaned too far over the lower railing trying to grab a glove Bennett was giving a child after the game. The fan was arrested.

(AP) ? The fire alarm: Waved off by managers. An exit door: Locked. The fire extinguishers: Not working and apparently "meant just to impress" inspectors and customers.

That is the picture survivors paint of the garment-factory fire Saturday that killed 112 people who were trapped inside or jumped to their deaths in desperation. For Bangladesh, where such factories commonly ignore safety as they rush to produce for retailers around the world, the tragedy was unusual only in scope: More than 200 people have died in garment-factory fires in the country since 2006.

About 15,000 Bangladeshi workers protested blocks from the gutted fire Monday, demanding justice for the victims and improved safety. Some 200 factories were closed for the day after the protest erupted in Savar, a suburb of Dhaka, the capital.

Protesters blocked a major highway, and some threw stones at factories and smashed vehicles, but there were no arrests and no clashes with police.

Maj. Mohammad Mahbub, fire department operations director, said investigators suspect that a short circuit caused the fire at the factory, which was making T-shirts and polo shirts.

But Mahbub said it was not the fire itself but the lack of safety measures in the eight-story building that made the blaze so deadly.

"Had there been at least one emergency exit through outside the factory, the casualties would have been much lower," he said.

He said firefighters recovered at least 100 bodies from the factory, and 12 more people died at hospitals after jumping from the building to escape the fire.

The government was unable to identify many victims because they were burned beyond recognition; they were buried Monday in a grave outside Dhaka. The government announced that Tuesday will be a day of national mourning, with the national flag flying at half-mast in honor of the dead.

Local media reported that up to 124 people were killed, and that about 100 people injured in the fire were being treated in about a dozen hospitals. Many were hurt as they jumped to escape the flames.

Survivor Mohammad Ripu said Monday that he tried to run out of the building when the fire alarm rang but was stopped.

"Managers told us, 'Nothing happened. The fire alarm had just gone out of order. Go back to work,'" Ripu said. "But we quickly understood that there was a fire. As we again ran for the exit point we found it locked from outside, and it was too late."

Ripu said he jumped from a second-floor window and suffered minor injuries.

Another surviving worker, Yeamin, who uses only one name, said fire extinguishers in the factory didn't work, "So these were meant just to impress the buyers or authority."

TV footage showed a team of investigators finding some unused fire extinguishers inside the factory.

The garment-factory fire was Bangladesh's deadliest in recent memory, but there have been several major factory fires in recent years, including one that killed 63 people in 2006 in southern Chittagong town.

Labor leaders hope outrage over the latest disaster will prompt change. Tahmina Rahman, general secretary of the Bangladesh Garment Workers Federation, says the group wants the government to work harder to punish factories for safety lapses.

"The owners go unpunished and so they don't care about installing enough security facilities," she said. "The owners should be held responsible and sent to jail."

The factory in Saturday's blaze is owned by Tazreen Fashions Ltd., a subsidiary of the Tuba Group that has produced clothing for Wal-Mart, at least in the past. Neither Tazreen nor Tuba Group officials could be reached for comment.

The Tuba Group is a major Bangladeshi garment exporter whose clients include Wal-Mart, Carrefour and IKEA, according to its website. Its factories export garments to the U.S., Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands, among other countries. The Tazreen factory, which opened in 2009 and employed about 1,700 people, made polo shirts, fleece jackets and T-shirts.

Tazreen was given a "high risk" safety rating after a May 16, 2011, audit conducted by an "ethical sourcing" assessor for Wal-Mart, according to a document posted on the Tuba Group's website. It did not specify what led to the rating.

Wal-Mart spokesman Kevin Gardner said online documents indicating an orange or "high risk" assessment after the May 2011 inspection and a yellow or "medium risk" report after an inspection in August 2011 appeared to pertain to the factory. The August 2011 letter said Wal-Mart would conduct another inspection within one year.

Gardner said it was not clear if that inspection had been conducted or whether the factory was still making products for Wal-Mart. If a factory is rated "orange" three times in two years, Wal-Mart won't place any orders for one year. The May 2011 report was the first orange rating for the factory.

"Our thoughts are with the families of the victims of this tragedy," the retailer said in a statement. "While we are trying to determine if the factory has a current relationship with Wal-Mart or one of our suppliers, fire safety is a critically important area of Wal-Mart's factory audit program and we have been working across the apparel industry to improve fire safety education and training in Bangladesh."

In its 2012 Global Responsibility report, Wal-Mart said it ceased working with 49 factories in Bangladesh in 2011 because of fire safety issues, and was working with its supplier factories to phase out production from buildings deemed high risk.

Bangladesh has some 4,000 garment factories, many without proper safety measures. The country annually earns about $20 billion from exports of garment products, mainly to the U.S. and Europe.

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association said it would stand by the victims' families and offered 100,000 takas ($1,250) to each of the families of the dead. Tazreen's owner was meeting with representatives of the group Monday afternoon.

"We will discuss what other things we can do for the families of the dead," The association's acting president, Siddiqur Rahman, said Sunday night on Rtv, a private television station. "We are worried about what has happened. We hope to discuss everything in detail in that meeting."

Another fire broke out Monday in a 12-story building housing four garment factories, but the fire department said it was quickly doused and there were no casualties.
