Definition
Colon cancer is cancer that occurs in the colon, the lower digestive system. Rectal cancer is cancer found in a few inches at the end of the colon. Many cases of colon cancer begins with small size, lumps of cells called adenomatous polyps are benign. These polyps usually cause colon cancer.

Symptom
Colon cancer has symptoms such as:
? Changes in bowel conditions, such as diarrhea or constipation or a change in bowel routines are not as usual
? there is bleeding in the rectum or blood in the stool
? Discomfort in the stomach area, such as cramps, bloating or pain
? Feeling of incomplete bowel movements when

? Lost weight

Causes & Risk Factors
Cause
It is unclear what causes colon cancer. But doctors believe that colon cancer occurs when normal cells in the colon unchanged. Normal cells grow and divide to keep the body functioning normally. But sometimes it becomes abnormal growth ? cells continue dividing even when the body does not need a new cell.
In the colon and rectum, this exaggerated growth may cause pre-cancerous cells form in the digestive tract.

Pre-cancerous cell growth in colon
Colorectal cancer most commonly begins in the form of clumps of polyps in the colon tract. Polyps can be shaped like a mushroom. Polyps also can not stand out or hidden in the wall of the colon. Polyps of this type is more difficult to detect. Removal of both types of polyps before they become cancer earlier can help prevent colon cancer.

Inborn gene mutation that increases the risk of colon cancer
Inborn gene mutation that increases the risk of colon cancer can be inherited in families, but this is only a small fraction of colon cancer cause. Some colon cancer syndrome include:
? Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). FAP is a rare disease causes thousands of polyps in the colon and rectum channel. People who have FAP and untreated increases the risk of colon cancer before age 40.
? Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC). HNPCC, also called Lynch syndrome increases the risk of colon cancer and cancers with HNPCC tend lain. Uman colon cancer before age 50 years.

Risk factors
Some factors that increase the risk of colon cancer include:
? Aged parents
? Having a personal note with colon cancer or polyps
? Have an inflammation of the digestive tract
? genetic syndromes that may increase the risk of colon cancer, familial adenomatous polyposis such as hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer and, which is also known as Lynch syndrome.
? Family history of colon cancer or polyps in the colon
? Eat foods high in fiber and low fat
? a passive lifestyle
? Diabetes
? Obesity
? Smoking
? Consuming alcohol
? Radiation therapy for cancer

Prevention
To prevent basal cell carcinoma, you can take the following steps:
? Avoid the sun during the day
? Use sun protection (eg Anthelios SX)
? Wear clothing that protects the body from the sun
? Be wary of drugs that skin is more sensitive to sunlight. Ask your doctor about the side effects of drugs you use
? Perform a medical examination regularly skin.
? Consumption of adequate vitamin D
? Fruits and vegetables may reduce cancer risk

5 NATO troops killed in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan?A person wearing an Afghan national security force uniform turned his weapon Sunday against civilian contractors with the U.S.-led military coalition, killing three.

In other incidents, five NATO service members were killed in roadside bombings over the past two days.

NATO said the attack on the civilian coalition workers occurred in western Afghanistan but disclosed few other details.

The gunman was killed during the incident, which is still being investigated. No further information about the civilians who died was released.

Afghan security forces or militants dressed in their uniforms have been killing a rising number of coalition forces, but they have not been specifically targeting contractors working for the coalition. So far this year, 26 foreign troops have been killed in this type of attacks.

In other violence, a spokesman for the governor of eastern Wardak province said insurgents had kidnapped five Afghan men working a base jointly operated by Afghan and NATO forces and killed them. Spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said their bodies were discovered early Sunday.

Also Sunday, Afghan officials reported that four civilians died when hundreds of shells and rockets were fired from neighboring Pakistan.

The artillery shells hit homes along frontier areas from which insurgents have in the past staged cross-border attacks.

There is little or no Afghan or NATO military presence in the area and large swaths of the region are controlled by insurgent groups. The information could not be independently verified because the area is largely off-limits to reporters.

The Afghan government has not openly blamed the Pakistani military for the artillery barrage, which reportedly hit districts in the eastern provinces of Nuristan and Kunar. Both are considered insurgent hotbeds, and militants allied with both the Afghan and Pakistani Taliban regularly cross the mountainous border in both directions.

President Hamid Karzai discussed artillery fire coming from Pakistan at a weekly meeting of his national security council, a statement said. It added that Karzai ordered an in-depth investigation into the attacks.

The cross-border attacks were discussed in Kabul last week during an official visit by Pakistan's new Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Cameron, Ashraf and Karzai jointly called for a common stand against insurgents operating in the lawless border areas. Ashraf complained at a news conference about attacks against Pakistan originating in Kunar.

Kabul's Foreign Ministry spokesman Janan Mosazai said, "The rocket attacks in the eastern provinces of Afghanistan are not acceptable to us, and we are strongly condemning these attacks. We believe that the continuation of such rocket attacks will have a negative impact on the friendly relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan."

All five of the NATO service members were killed in roadside bomb attacks? one Saturday in the east, and on Sunday, two in the east and two in the south. NATO provided no further details on the incidents or the nationalities of the troops.

The deaths bring the number of foreign forces killed in July to 32, and a total of 247 so far this year.

NATO also said that it killed a number of insurgents with an airstrike in the Mohammad Agha district of eastern Logar province. It did not provide further details.

Fighting in eastern Afghanistan has been raging since spring as NATO tries to clear the area of insurgents.

Antivirus protection is an absolute necessity for the modern PC, but alone it's not sufficient to guarantee security. At the very least you need a two-way firewall as well; adding phishing protection and other security features couldn't hurt. Panda Cloud Antivirus Pro Edition 2.0 ($29.99 direct) combines antivirus, firewall, antiphishing, and a few other features, making it a small-scale security suite. Based on our testing, though, you might be better off just combining Panda's free antivirus with a free firewall.

The same miniscule program that installs Panda Cloud Antivirus Free Edition 2.0 (free, 3.5 stars) will install the Pro edition too, if you have a registration key. You can also upgrade the Free edition to Pro at any time.

Same Protection Against Malware
The antivirus component is the same for both editions, so I'll just summarize my results from testing the Free edition here. For full details, please read that review.

Panda Cloud Antivirus is best at keeping malware from gaining a foothold on a clean PC. It had trouble installing or running on many of my test systems. Fortunately, Panda offers a large number of tools to help out with the cleanup process. Unfortunately, they were all needed, and getting some of the test systems cleaned up took several days.

Thanks in no small part to Panda Cloud Cleaner, Panda SafeDisk, and remote-controlled use of the PSCAN tool, Panda detected 84 percent of the threats and scored 5.4 of 10 possible points for removal. With 6.4 points, Bitdefender Total Security 2013 ($79.95 direct for three licenses, 4 stars) has the best score among products tested with my current malware collection. For details on how I perform this analysis, see How We Test Malware Removal.

Panda was much more effective at blocking new malware attacks. It detected 92 percent of the threats and scored 9.2 of 10 possible points, and earned 10 of 10 points for blocking rootkits. The most effective malware blocker among products tested with the same sample set was SecureIT Plus ($5.95/month direct, 2 stars), with 9.7 points. Most of the independent antivirus labs include Panda's technology in their tests. It gets good marks overall, though it's not at the level of top-scoring vendors like Bitdefender, Kaspersky, and Symantec. The chart below summarizes recent results, and the article How We Interpret Antivirus Lab Tests introduces the various labs.

Limited Phishing Protection
Panda's URL filter keeps users from accidentally visiting malicious or fraudulent (phishing) sites. Both editions get the benefit of this protection, but in testing it proved less than fully effective. It didn't block any actual malicious sites, though the antivirus caught some threats during the download process. Its phishing detection rate lagged 68 percentage points behind Norton and one point behind Internet Explorer alone. The article How We Test Antiphishing explains how I obtain the freshest phishing URL samples and derive these scores.

Panda doesn't include a parental control component, but if you were desperate to know what websites have been visited from your family's computer, you might conceivably use the URL monitor feature. Present in both Free and Pro editions, this feature lists recently executed programs and optionally tracks all URLs visited by each.

If the programs report reveals that a suspicious program has been connecting with shady websites, you can click a button to block the program. Doing so puts it in Panda's Recycle Bin and prevents it being used.

If you?ve ever wanted to know what the iPad looked like before it was released back in 2010, we?ve got the answer right here for you. The folks over at Network World recently did some digging through some Apple/Samsung court filings and discovered a bunch of images showing mockups of the iPad from the early 2000s. It seems that Apple was already working on tablet prototypes sometime between 2002 and 2004 ? many years before Samsung?s Galaxy Tab came to life.

And despite being worked on so many years before the introduction of the initial iPad, it looks like it hasn?t changed very much. Minus the inclusion of the home button on the front facing screen and the reduced thickness, the current iPad looks just like the prototype version of the tablet. Facebook last in customer satisfaction: report

Facebook received the lowest ranking of social media sites when it comes to customer satisfaction, as well as the lowest rank for e-businesses,?according to a study released Tuesday by the American Customer Satisfaction Index.

The social network's "unrivaled user base is impressive, but its satisfaction ratings are not. Facebook falls 8 percent?to 61 (on a scale of 100), one of the lowest scores of any company in the Index," said the ACSI report.

Facebook also set a "new record-low score for e-business," and was "among the five lowest-scoring companies of the 230 measured by the ACSI." The?report is based on more than 5,000 surveys collected during the 2nd?quarter, and?includes scores for?e-business websites and analysis by customer experience analytics firm?ForeSee, ACSI?s partner for the E-Business Report.

"One problem for Facebook is that survey respondents say that ads actively interfere with their experience on the site and are among the things they like least about Facebook," the ACSI report said. Relative newcomer Google+ "debuts on top of the social media category with a score of 78, but there are no ads on Google+."

Facebook, in a statement to NBC?News?about the findings, said "We care deeply about the experience people have on Facebook and that's why we're so focused on building and improving the products we offer. Giving people the means to interact with the people when they want, where they want and how they want is the most meaningful way for us to make our relationship with people even stronger."

The strengths of Google+ "may ?be Facebook?s weaknesses, as users complain about ads and privacy concerns. However, the most frequent complaints about Facebook are changes to its user interface, most recently the introduction of the Timeline feature," the ACIS said.

Among other popular social media sites,?Pinterest, with a score of 69,?"has the potential to be an advertiser or marketer's dream," the ACIS report said. "It has a very active and engaged user base, but a score of 69 suggests there is room for improvement."

Twitter had a score of 64, and professional social networking site LinkedIn was rated at 63.?

Wikipedia tied Google+ at 78 "to lead the category for a third straight year," the ACIS.?Google?s other social media property, YouTube, slips a point to 73, but still scores above the social media?category average of 69.

Larry Freed, ForeSee president and CEO, said in a statement that Facebook and Google+ are competing "on two critical fronts: customer experience and market penetration. Google+ handily wins the former, and Facebook handily wins the latter, for now."

But, he said, he expects Google to "leverage its multiple properties and mobile capabilities to attract users at a rapid pace. If Facebook doesn?t feel the pressure to improve customer satisfaction now, that may soon change."

New therapeutic target for prostate cancer identified

A small, naturally occurring nucleic acid sequence, called a microRNA, known to regulate a number of different cancers, appears to alter the activity of the androgen receptor, which plays a critical role in prostate cancer. Directly targeting microRNA-125b to block androgen receptor activity represents a novel approach for treating castrate-resistant prostate cancer. This promising new strategy for improving the effectiveness of anti-androgenic and other hormonal therapies is described in an article in BioResearch Open Access.

Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer affecting men and the second most common cause of cancer death among men. In the article "miR-125b Regulation of Androgen Receptor Signaling Via Modulation of the Receptor Complex Co-Repressor NCOR2," Xiaoping Yang, Lynne Bernis, Lih-Jen Su, Dexiang Gao, and Thomas Flaig, University of Colorado Denver (Aurora) and University of Minnesota (Duluth), looked for targets of microRNA-125b that might shed light on its role in regulating prostate cancer and found that it directly inhibits NCOR2, which acts to repress the androgen receptor. The authors point out that "the androgen receptor is a critical therapeutic target in prostate cancer" and that alterations in the receptor are essential for the development of castrate-resistant prostate cancer, in which the disease no longer responds to hormonal therapies.

"This research provides new insight into the mechanism of miR-125b regulation of castrate-resistance prostate cancer through the identification of a novel target for miR-125b," says Editor-in-Chief Jane Taylor, PhD, MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine, University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Mom, 2 Boys Shot Dead By Ex Who Attempted Suicide | Old School ...

Sad? Goldsmith (pictured) 26,?and her two young boys, John Devine, Jr., 6 (pictured left), and Jon ?Tee Devine, 5 (pictured?right),?were shot dead Sunday morning by the children?s father.

The children?s father John Devine (pictured), 36, reportedly confessed to authorities that he forced his way in to Goldsmith?s home and shot?her to death. She was 26. Then he shot his two boys while they were sleeping. Afterward, Devine shot himself in the chest but survived the wound and is recovering at University Hospital in Louisville.

After Devine confessed about the triple murder to police, they charged him with three counts of murder and one of count burglary.

The children were last spotted by neighbors playing outside of their home on Friday, then again on Saturday, when they?were reportedly helping?their mom wash her car. Goldsmith?s home alarm went off and alerted police who came?to investigate and discovered the bodies

According to Goldsmith?s sister Omega,?the slain woman and her ex had a turbulent relationship.? The couple?s on-again, off-again relationship included a history of domestic violence. WLKY stumbled upon five domestic violence arrests involving the children?s father against Goldsmith.

Neighbors say that?Goldsmith had recently moved into the?area and had not yet established?relationships with any of?them. Omega adds that her sister?s move to the new subdivision home was supposed to be a fresh start for her and the boys. The sister lamented, ?They loved their mama. She loved her boys, and this should make parents hug their children every night.?

Russia fears new epidemic of synthetic marijuana

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia's leading anti-drug crusader says the abuse of synthetic marijuana is turning into a "horrible" epidemic in his country.

Experts say a range of hallucinogens known as "spice" are very hard to kick, and addicts lose sleep, weight and get kidney and brain disorders from them.

Evgeny Roizman, who spoke Wednesday, heads a rehabilitation clinic in the central city of Ekaterinburg.

Concerned about the spread of "spice," Russian drug enforcement agencies have banned several of its chemical ingredients. But producers can easily change the chemical makeup to come up with new brands, which are advertised online and widely sold across Russia.

Components of "spice" have been banned in several European nations and in parts of the United States.

Independence Day Parade Takes Over Brighton

7/4/12 - Thousands of people braved the heat to gather around Main Street in Brighton for the annual Independence Day Parade, organized by the Livingston Sunrise Rotary Club. A wide variety of floats made the journey across town from organizations including local nonprofits, veterans? associations, political campaigns, businesses, and the armed forces. The crowds were also treated to fly-bys from military planes and jets during the parade. The Sunrise Rotary also organized a Hungry Duck Run half-marathon and 5k before the parade and a rubber duck race at the Brighton Mill Pond afterward. Dell buying Quest Software for $2.36 billion | Technology | Eugene ...

ROUND ROCK, Texas (AP) ? In a move to branch out beyond the weakening personal computer business, Dell said Monday that it's buying Quest Software for about $2.36 billion.

Dell said Quest would make it more competitive in the server, storage, networking and computing services business.

Quest helps companies manage databases and provides other corporate IT services. Quest's technology would add to its security and data protections offerings, along with other services aimed at business customers, Dell said.

With the deal, Dell, the second-largest U.S. PC maker after Hewlett-Packard Co., is trying diversify beyond the lower-margin business of making personal computers. PC sales have weakened in the last two years as consumers increasingly navigate the Internet on smartphones and tablet computers such as Apple Inc.'s hot-selling iPad.

Both Dell and HP have been buying software and technology services companies to expand beyond PCs and plumb the more fertile territory of advising big companies and government agencies on how to manage their technology needs. As part of that process, the companies hope to sell more software and computing equipment.

In late May, Dell Inc. reported disappointing first-quarter financial results and predicted weak sales in the current quarter. The computer maker said sales to government, big businesses and consumers decreased. Total product revenue fell 5 percent to $11.42 billion in the Jan.-March quarter as revenue from mobility products, software, desktop PCs, and storage products all decreased. Sales to consumers took a particularly sharp decline of 12 percent, while government sales to fell 4 percent and revenue from large businesses dipped 3 percent.

Sales to small and medium-sized businesses were a bright spot. They grew 4 percent.

Dell's acquisition comes in the midst of some belt-tightening at the company. In June, it outlined a cost-cutting plan designed to trim expenses by $2 billion over the next three years.

Quest, based in Aliso Viejo, Calif., had agreed to be bought by Insight Venture Partners for $23 per share, or $2 billion, in March, and a series of increasing bids from Insight and another bidder followed.

The March bid was a 19 percent premium to the company's closing stock price the day before the deal was announced. Dell's $28 per share offer announced Monday is a 44 percent premium to Quest's ending price of $19.40 from March 8.

The deal is expected to close in Dell's August-October quarter. Both boards have approved the deal, but Quest shareholders must still vote it through.

Quest CEO Vinny Smith, who has a 34 percent stake in Quest, had agreed to support Insight's offer in March. But he will vote his shares for the Dell deal, Quest said Monday. In a statement Monday, Smith said that with the Dell deal, Quest's products and workforce would be the "foundation" for Dell's software business.

Quest paid a $25 million breakup fee as well as $12 million for expenses to Insight and Vector Capital, which joined Insight as a partner bidder last month.

Shares of Quest Software Inc. slipped 5 cents to $27.76 in morning trading. Shares of Dell, which is based in Round Rock, Texas, dipped 8 cents to $12.44. In the last year, Dell's stock has traded in a range between $11.68 and $18.36.
